Google Gemini is testing a new UI for Android tablets

Google is testing a new version of its Gemini app to make its AI adapt to bigger screens. It may soon be available for Android tablets.

Android Authority discovered the new UI in its APK teardown of the Google app, specifically by unlocking the feature through the 16.20.48.sa.arm64 beta version. The report points out that while Gemini's current app, which is designed primarily for phones, also works on tablets, it is not well optimized for larger displays. It results in the center of the screen being used for Gemini, while the sides are empty. This is very notable when you try using the AI in landscape mode.

That is the problem that Google aims to address with a proper UI made for tablets. A video shared by Android Authority showcases the upcoming UI. It is very similar to Gemini on the web. The tablet-UI has a sidebar on the left edge, which can be collapsed or expanded with the tap of a button. The rest of the UI takes up the remaining space of the screen, with no wastage of the space. Users can interact with Gemini normally, such as to select the AI model to use, and the text bar to type in their queries. The keyboard is resized properly to fit the screen. It is also possible that Gemini could also be optimized for foldable devices.

While the redesigned interface is impressive, it is unclear when this native tablet version of Google Gemini will be accessed for all users. Google recently revealed Gemini AI on Chrome for Windows and Mac, and new widgets for Android and iOS. It is evident that the search giant wants its AI to be available across all of its apps, and across all major platforms.
