Google says Chrome is faster than ever, sees a 10% performance gain in a year

Google has published an article in its "The Fast and the Curious" series to showcase various performance enhancements that were made to Chrome. It says that Chrome is faster than ever, and  outlines how it achieved the highest score on Speedometer 3 benchmark.

In August 2024, Google Chrome v128 managed to clock a score of 42.84. Nearly a year later, Chrome v139 dev managed to score 52.35. The chart below shows how Chrome's performance fared through the milestones in Speedometer 3.

Google says Chrome is faster than ever

Google says that the benchmark was done on an Apple Macbook Pro M4 with macOS 15, and the tests included the following: HTML parsing, JavaScript and JSON processing, JavaScript and Document Object Model (DOM) interaction, DOM manipulations (element insertion and removal), Text size computation (font shaping), Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) application and layout calculation and Pixel rendering.

Google attributed the 10% improvement since August 2024 by its efforts to focus on refining fundamental rendering paths across the entire stack. It has heavily optimized memory layouts of many internal data structures across DOM, CSS, layout, and painting components of Chromium's Blink rendering engine. Improvements were made that allowed the browser to reduce the memory churn, and optimal utilization of the CPU cache. Google also noted that strings in the render were improved, as was font shaping for rendering text content.

Benchmarks are one thing, they just show how fast a device or software completes a task, but real-world performance is what matters. A browser with a proper ad-blocker could perform better than one that actively prevents ad blocking extensions.
