Microsoft Edge is testing an AI-powered history search

Microsoft is adding a new AI-powered feature in Edge. This time, it will let you search your browsing history, even when the query doesn't match the keyword completely.

The feature, which is currently in beta, is described as an enhanced search that can find websites in your History even when you use a synonym, phrase, or typo. So, let's say you don't remember a site's name or the link of the page, you could type something close to it, and Edge will find it for you, even if you didn't spell it correctly. That's pretty neat.

Microsoft says that after this feature is turned on, sites you visit will be displayed under enhanced history search results. The important thing here is that the setting has to be enabled manually, which is a good thing, if you don't like it, don't use it.

Now, it may seem like you may have heard about a similar feature earlier, and you would be correct. Google Chrome has an AI-powered history search feature too. However, unlike Chrome's version which sends the data to Google's servers, Edge's AI History Search uses an on-device model which is trained on your data, and never leaves your device or sent to Microsoft. In other words, it is privacy-friendly, well, at least it doesn't seem as bad as Windows Recall.

Another notable feature that is being tested in Edge is the new Media control center, which you can use to manage and control multiple media sources in one place. This will also let you access videos in picture-in-picture mode quickly, cast media to other devices, and control music, video. The media control center icon, appears as a music note icon, next to the address bar when media with sounds are playing.

Admins can manage Microsoft Edge's AI History search with the following policy: EdgeHistoryAISearchEnabled. The feature is currently available in Microsoft Edge version 138.0.3351.14 Beta, however it is rolling out on a limited basis, so not everyone may have access to it for now.
