Google Gemini now lets you upload videos, and it analyzes the contents

Google is rolling out a new feature for its Gemini app. You can upload videos, and ask the AI to provide an analysis of the contents.

9to5Google's Abner Li reports that he was able to access the new feature. The video upload option works similar to how files can be uploaded using the composer in the app. Users will need to tap on the Plus button, select Gallery or Files, and choose the video that they wish to upload. There is no option to use the built-in camera in Gemini.

Once the video has been uploaded to Gemini, it is displayed in the conversation, just like how videos shared in chat apps show up. You can ask Gemini about things that are seen in the video, and it responds with the information.

You might think, that's not useful, I can tell what's in the video already. Sure, but what if you can't? It might be useful if you come across old family videos or unrecognized clips, maybe even something in a language that you are not familiar with, and you want to learn about it. If the AI could provide assistance in such a scenario, that would be pretty cool. Video understanding and narration could be useful as an accessibility option too, That's why I think Gemini video upload seems to be interesting.

While the feature is rolling out to users, i.e. it may not be available for everyone yet, Google has not locked it to a specific tier. The report says that all users, including free and paid accounts, have access to video uploads. It is available across iOS and Android in the beta app, and Gemini 2.5 Flash, and 2.5 Pro models. It is not available in the web version of Gemini yet.
